TONGE (now ADDINGTON) OF HIGHWAY

The Hon. Raymond Anthony Addington, of Highway, Wilts, Major late 8th K.G.O. Light Cavalry, Indian Army, served in the Great War 1914-16, in S. Persia 1918-19, in Waziristan 1919-2, b. 24 Jan, 1887; educ. Cheltenham and R.M.C. Sandhurst; m. 26 Aug. 1913, Gladys Mary Dever, dau. of late Thomas Hughes, Commissioner of Chinese Customs, and has issue,

  1. John Tonge Anthony Pellew, b. 3 Oct. 1914.
  2. Hilley  William Dever, b. 31 Oct. 1917.
  3. Raymond Thomas Casa Major, b. 27 Jan. 1919.
  4. Gurth Louis Francis, b. 26 Feb. 1920.
  5. Leslie Richard Bagnall, b. 20 Sep. 1923
  1. Prudence Mary, b. 11 June, 1916.
  2. Mary Octavia, b. 17 April, 1927
  3. Elizabeth Clare, b. 4 Aug. 1928.

Major Addington is the 2nd son of Gerald, 4th Viscount Sidmouth, and brother of the present Viscount.  He s. his uncle, Mr. Francis Henry Tonge, of Highway, Wilts, in 1936.

    Lineage-Henry Tonge, of Hanham Grange, Bitton, co. Gloucs, and of Highway, Wilts, youngest son of James Tong and Helena, his wife, dau. of Edward Osbourne, bapt. 15 Dec. 1670; d. 2 Jan. 1762; m. 26 April, 1707, Mary Bullock.  He left issue, 1. John; 2. James; 3. Henry; and 1. Mary; m. John Morgan.  The 3rd son,

    Henry Tonge, M.D., of Redland, Westbury-on-Trym, co. Gloucs, m. Joanna Barnes.  Admon. granted 16 April, 1762.  Her will is dated 20 Nov. 1767.  They had issued Henry and John.  The elder son,

    Henry Tonge, of Arno's Court, nr. Bristol, m. Dec. 1768, Anne Eliza, dau. of Vice-Admiral Harry Norris, son of Sir John Norris, by Hon. Elizabeth Aylmer, his wife, dau. of Matthew, 1st Lord Aylmer, and by her had (with a dau., Lucy Anne, m. F. W. Dickinson) a son,

    William Norris Tonge, of Alverston, co. Gloucs, and Highway, Wilts, Capt. R.N., J.P. and D.L. for both cos., b. 9 Deb 1777; m. 14 May, 1803, Mary Ann, dau. of Rev. John Bryan, M.A., of West Charlton, Somerset, by Maria Clemencia his wife, eld. dau. of Henry Casamajor, and by her (who d. 8 Aug. 1843) has issue,

  1. William Henry, Lieut. 17th Lancers, d. unm. 1 Oct. 1833, aged 26.
  2. Henry, d. unm.
  3. Augustus Henry, of Highway
  4. John Henry, Capt. 14th Light Dragoons, and afterwards 16th Lancers, b. 9 Dec. 1816; m. Harriette, only child of John W. Connell, and d.s.p. 13 Aug. 1853.
  5. Louis Charles Henry, who s. his brother.
  6. Harry Norris, d. young 29 April, 1841.
  1. Maria Anne, d. unm. 27 May, 1833, aged 21.
  2. Lucy Elizabeth, m. 16 June, 1841, Rev. Augustus William Noel, only son of Hon. Frederick  Noel, Capt. R.N., and had had issue (see Burke's Peerage, Gainsborough, E.).  She d. 1874.  He d. 1884 leaving issue.
  3. Elizabeth Anne, m. John Style Norris, Capt. 11th Regt., and had a son, John.
  4. Helen, d. young.

Mr. Tonge d. 4 April 1844, and was s. by his son,

    Augustus Henry Tonge, of Highway, Wilts, and Vittoria House, Chelteham, Capt. Royal Wiltshire Militia, who d. unm. 1867, and was s. by his brother,

    Louis Charles Henry Tonge, of Highway, Wilts, Capt. R.N., b. 7 Jan 1818; m. 1st, 12th Oct. 1852, Charlotte Augusta (d. 21 May, 1866), 3rd dau. of Hon. and  Very Rev. George Pellew, Dean of Norwich, son of Admiral Viscount Exmouth (see Burke's Peerage), by Hon. Frances Addington, dau. of 1st Viscount Sidmouth, and has issue,

  1. Francis Henry, late of Highway
  2. Henry Fleetwood, b. 18 May 1860; d. unm. June 1883.
  3. Ethel Mary (Up Ottery Manor, Honiton, Devon), m. 27 July, 1881, Gerald Anthony Pellew Bagnall Addington, 4th Viscount Sidmouth, and has issue (see Burke's Peerage).  He d. 25 March 1915, leaving with other issue, a 2nd son,

Capt. Tonge m. 2ndly, 9 Sept. 1881, Annette Sophia, dau. of William Henry Chicheley Plowden, of Ewhurst Park, co. Southampton, and d. 9 Jan. 1895.  He was s. by his elder son,

    Francis Henry Tonge, of Highway, Wilts, Capt. late Royal Wilts Militia, and afterwards 62nd (1st Batt. Wiltshire Regt.), Lord of the Manor of Highway, b. 8 June, 1855; educ. Winchester; m. 12 June, 1889, Lady Madeleine Dora (d. 11 Dec. 1925) eldest dau. of Francis Alexander, 8th Earl of Kintore (see Burke's Peerage)  He d.s.p.  6 March, 1936 and was s. in the Highway estate by his nephew.
